The Game pleaded not guilty Tuesday to three felony charges stemming from an alleged run-in with a man on an opposing team during a basketball game at a South Los Angeles school.
Jayceon Terrell Taylor was charged with one count each of making criminal threats, possession of a firearm in a school zone and exhibiting a firearm on the grounds of a facility for minors.
The 27-year-old rapper is free on $50,000 bail, with a pretrial hearing set for Oct. 30.
At a Sept. 4 preliminary hearing, Rodrick Shannon testified that he exchanged words with Taylor, who was playing for an opposing team during the Feb. 24 game at the Rita Walters Educational Learning Complex.
The prosecution witness said Taylor told him that his team was “garbage” and hit him in the left cheek with a closed fist.
Shannon testified that Taylor got into a fighting stance — as did he —
and that Taylor proceeded out a door after people from his team grabbed
Shannon.
He testified that he went out to the parking lot to look for his son and saw Taylor reach into a Cadillac Escalade and brandish a firearm.
“He started proceeding towards me. The gun was still in his hand. He yelled that I’m a … fool. I turned around and ran because I feared for my life,” Shannon testified.
The witness — who denied under cross-examination that he had said he intended to file a lawsuit — testified that Taylor had the gun pointed down.
Taylor was arrested May 11 by Los Angeles police officers executing a search warrant at his Glendale home.
If convicted, he could face more than five years in prison.
